It exhibits several distinctive features that characterize its appearance and ecological role.Growing up to 100 cm (39 in) tall, corn-cockle sports lanceolate leaves and slender pink flowers measuring up to 5 cm (2.0 in) in diameter. The plant's stem and its few branches terminate in single deep pink to purple flowers. Flowering typically occurs from May to September. Each petal of corn-cockle bears two or three discontinuous black lines, adding to its visual appeal. The sepals, which are narrow and pointed, exceed the petals in length and are joined at the base to form a rigid tube with ten ribs. Leaves are pale green, opposite, narrowly lanceolate, and range from 45 to 145 mm (1.8–5.7 in) in length. The plant produces seeds in a many-seeded capsule.Corn-cockle has been associated with European agricultural landscapes for at least 4,000 years, earning it the generic name ""garland of fields."" Glasshouse studies have shown that wheat plants grown in the presence of corn-cockle produce more leaves, stems, and grain than those grown alone. Various historical accounts document its presence in agricultural landscapes and its impact on rural populations. Despite its toxicity and historical associations with agricultural problems, corn-cockle continues to be recognized as a distinctive and visually striking component of natural and agricultural landscapes.Felsko's dedication to both artistic excellence and scientific accuracy makes her work coveted by botanical enthusiasts, interior decorators, or anyone seeking to infuse their space with the beauty of nature.
